McFly Angler is all about fishing. I love to fish all types of fishing. Mainly fly fishing, but do conventional fishing as well on occasion. I used to live in Colorado, and did a lot of small creek and river fishing for trout of all sizes. From small dry fly fishing for tiny creek brook-trout and cutthroat, to large river fishing for monster brown trout, I did it all. However I recently moved to Texas where I now fish rivers and creeks for warm water species like bass, sunfish, catfish, and carp. Also the gulf of Mexico is close by, so I do try and pop down there once in a while for speckled trout and redfish on the fly. I also teach people how to tie flies on this channel. From simple flies to complicated flies, from dry flies to saltwater flies. I tie them all. I usually have my videos come out on Fridays, so mark your calendars and come by every week to check out my videos.
Foam Spider - Best fly for kids?
I will be teaching some fly fishing classes at a kids retreat camp kinda thing. The camp is called reaching outdoors and they have week long camps where they bring 8-17 year olds and teach them outdoor skills like fishing, hunting and archery. They asked me to teach some fly fishing classes and I was happy to do so. These are kids though, and the likelyhood of them loosing my flies are very high. So I wanted to tie some that were quick to tie, and cheap as well. I didn't want to spend a ton of money and a small strip of foam with a couple rubber legs will tie me 5 flies. Just about as cheap as it can be, and it doesn't hurt that Risen fly offers great deals on high quality hooks. The best part is they work great for sunfish. Of course that is what we will be catching, it's the best fish for kids to catch. Im sure we will find some bass as well though. I just want each kid to get hooked up to at least one fish.
I forgot to mention, I am using a nymph hook because they are generally stronger than dry fly hooks, and being foam, it's hard to sink these. The foam flies do just fine with nymph hooks.

Teaching my Kids to Fly Fish
Переглядів 46021 день тому
I was able to go back to the Reaching outdoor camp, because I needed to film a few things for an advertisement video I am making for them. However this time I brought my family. My two children had a blast playing in the water and fishing. After I got some of the filming done in the morning that I needed to do, I was able to get out and fish with my kids. We didn't have a lot of time, but that ...

They are a Christian based organization where they help disciple these young boys while also providing them with the opp...
Mole Fly - A very simple yet effective emerger - McFly Angler Fly Tying Tutorial
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Місяць тому
The Mole fly was created by Charlie Craven, it is very similar to something called a shuttlecock fly. I mostly see Charlie tie this with Beaver dubbing, but this synthetic will work as well. Now since I changed up the dubbing and colors for this fly, I guess you cannot call it a mole fly anymore technically. But that's the point of tying your own flies, it's to make the fly useful for your own ...

I tied this fly a while back for you guys, and it's one of my favorite all around patterns for fishing a wide range of fish and rivers. However I recently got the Petejeans clip system from a subscriber, thank you so much Justin! Anyway, I found that this fly becomes quicker and easier when using these clips. It really helps getting the dubbing loop materials ready ahead of time and allows me t...
Petejeans Chickabou and Dubbing Streamer

Petejean is known for his CDC flies and his clip system. However he also uses the clips to tie streamers as well. I saw him tie a streamer using a compound dubbing loop made with dubbing and mini marabou feathers. I just had to give it a try, and Im going to be honest, I think it's my new favorite streamer. It reminds me a lot of the brahma bugger, or soft hackle bugger, but it's easier to tie ...
Fishing a Random River at an RV Park

My parents are out visiting while looking at houses to buy. They recently sold their house in Tennessee and were out house shopping. The RV park they stayed at was right on the Medina river. Unfortunately the river access from the RV park was way too deep to wade, and the fishing was just not all that great right there. I saw a few little sunfish pop their heads up and hit the surface, but none...
Birds Nest Fly
Переглядів 1,5 тис.2 місяці тому
The birds nest fly is super easy and really buggy. It is difficult to tie this incorrectly since the point of it is to make it as buggy as possible. It's basically a modified hares ear fly that adds legs and removes the wing case. Originally I believe this was tied with wood duck for the tail and legs, but I wanted to utilize some hen feathers from one of my chickens who died. I raise chickens ...
Modified Rainbow Midge

Rainbow midges are some of my go to attractor patterns when fishing small midges for trout. They are bright, and shiny and just plain work. This is one tied very similar, but I added a ribbing with wire, and also used the feathers of my hen who died. I plucked her feathers for fly tying since they were so pretty. I figured I would honor her with a fly that matched her personality which was very...
Honoring my Hen with Partridge and Orange

I had a chicken hen that recently died. I plucked her feathers and saved them for use in my flies. Her breed was called a silver phoenix, and their feathers are beautifully mottled and resemble a partridge. So I decided to tie up a partridge and orange fly in her honor. They are classy looking patterns that are still effective on trout even today. The feathers while look similar do have differe...

This fly is such an easy and quick fly to tie when you have the Petejean Magic clip system. I am so grateful to Justin for giving me this (along with many other things) recently. This is the first fly I tried with this clip system and many more to come. I really enjoy tying with it and it opens up many possibilities for flies. This caddis is not only easy, but it will float very well since it's...

The Humpy fly is a classic pattern that is super high floating. It has withstood the hand of time and continues to be a regular in many Fishermans fly boxes. It can be tied in a number of different colors and is a really beautiful looking fly when tied correctly. However it is rather difficult to tie. No question it is not the easiest fly in the world, in fact I would say it's one of the more d...

Well tied! 👍🏻
Great tutorial, tganks
I tied a half dozen of these. they were very liked at a donation auction fishing group.
That’s awesome! Glad people liked them. They are a pretty cool pattern for sure. The original tier came up with something special for sure
I tiy this in blues with a black back with black pearl flash works well
Awesome! Yeah they can be tied in all different color combos, once you find the one that works then keep tying them.
Where is spot #7??
Where is spot #7??
Neat fly
Thanks, I didn’t come up with it, but it works well! Just wanted to bring ya all along while I tie them
@@McFlyAngler you're welcome. It's ok that it's not your pattern, it's nice you shared it with us.
Thanks, I continue to be frustrated with the UV curing resins, spent lots of money on them, seems like they all are guaranteed to dry out after they are used for the first time - doesn’t matter how well you tighten the bottle.
@@barry4fish19 you're welcome
The solarez bottles I have are a year or more old and still working. With this bone dry, it might crystallize a bit, just place it in the microwave for 10 seconds at a time, and it will thin out.
What an amazing spot to bring the fam. My sons (6 and 8) love catching pan fish on fly rods. Its amazing how quickly they learn when you have patience with them.
Yes, sunfish probably are the best to teach kids on. They do learn quickly that’s for sure
I just purchased a Risen ITB 8wt with there sale on them. Seems like a great rod. Need to take it out for carp soon and hopefully for some smaller Red Fish and Snook down in Florida this fall.
Awesome! Yeah they have great deals there, and excellent quality gear. What weight rod did you get?
Buck tail all the way
I agree
Anybody who has watched "The African Queen" knows it doesn't have to rain on you to cause a flash flood.
Never seen that movie, is it a movie? Anyway yes your right, no need for rain where your at for flash flooding. I don’t remember what I said in the video though. Did I mention anything regarding flash flooding?

I love the video I’m planning a trip out there and really appreciate the advice. What net are you using though out the video?
Thanks? Glad you liked the video! Good luck I hope you catch! The net is custom made by a subscriber. I don’t think they make nets anymore though.
Will definitely try this one cracking pattern !
Hope you like it!
I would think that someone who calls themselves McFly would be able to pronounce "O'Shawnnessy" correctly!!! Just kidding, blowing you a line of crap!!! This is my favorite sand flea/mole crab pattern.
Thanks, and get this, I’m adopted into an Irish family. I’m the only red head in the Irish family. And turns out when I met my birth mother she told me I wasn’t Irish. Haha! I’m like mostly German and a little Italian. Go figure!
I see the scamgelicons are grifting hard on flyfishing gear
I don’t understand the statement please describe whatcha mean
Great to see your kids having fun with their dad. Don’t forget to teach them to wet there hands before they touch the fish. 🎣
Yeah they had fun. And yes, I didn’t press the issue here because their hands were wet. They were playing and splashing in the water. But when they get older and understand better, yeah for sure
Thank you kindly, brother for the tutorial !
No problem 👍
Hey, really cool seeing you with the family teaching the kids to fly fish. It reminds me of when I used to do that too, and it was and kinda difficult. Doing video at the same time must make it even tougher. Very nice day on the water and lots more in the future. God bless and enjoy!
Glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah filming wasn’t Easy. As you can see I didn’t focus much on the filming. Haha!
I haven’t gone fly fishing in a while and I’m sad
Oh I know the feeling! I went like 6 months without being able to fish. I pray you get a chance to be able to soon.
What type of flies are you using
The flies were a foam hopper type fly. The sunfish were going crazy for them. Since it was my kids Fishing, I decided not to go after big bass or anything, but to ensure that they catch a fair amount of fish which means sunfish.
When you fishing flats or shallow as in this case then stealth is paramount, cause the way you fishing you spooking the fish . 😂
Good tips. Check out some of my redfish flats fishing in the gulf
Imatates a iso nymph great try it next time iso are around
I gotta start tying these. Although biot tails drive me crazy as im pretty new to tying. I only use flies for steelhead, thus heavy flies really shine and you can make these in so many colors and sizes
Biot tails drive me crazy also and I’ve been tying for many years. They do get easier but will always be a bit of a pain.
Beautiful area bud. Congrats on the fish and the kids are going to have a blast
Oh man, the video doesn’t do it justice! Super beautiful! Thanks man! Yeah I was happy about those fish. Not huge but very good size fish for south Texas fly fishing.
@@McFlyAngler oh i bet! Hey a fish is a fish and a welcome site regardless of size.
Beautifully clear river. Did you sight fish or just cast? Does the river dry up during the summer months? Looks like a great ministry opportunity.
Most of it was site fishing. You can see the fish in the water for sure. Some blind casting but mostly site casting yeah. I don’t think it dries up normally in the summer, it’s spring fed.
Fly tying to good music. Can’t be beat! 😂👍
Good music is expensive to use. I use what I can use for free, otherwise it would cost me money to make videos. As a UA-camr in the fly fishing world, videos don’t usually get the kinda views that make much of anything and therefore even just purchasing music rights to use for a video costs more than I make in a video.
@@McFlyAngler I grew up on bluegrass and country music. Matter of fact my dad is practicing tomorrow with his bluegrass band! They have been playing together for over 50 years now. Sadly their health is failing some of them, and some have passed away. If you have ever seen Ralph Stanley you’ve sen my dad. People often mistook the two backstage! They could pass for identical twins. I had a pic of them together from many years ago, but have no idea what I did with it. But personally I love the music you used! 😃👍
Oh ok, sorry for that! I’ve had comments that the music is terrible, I thought this was similar. My bad! I’m glad you liked the music. I personally like bluegrass also. I used to love a band called nickel creek. Unfortunately they broke up in 2014
@@McFlyAngler no problem! Pay them no mind. They probably listen to hippity hop or rap music. Music is like candy. You keep the good tuff and toss the rapper! 😃😂
You are a great fly typer. Love your bideo
Thank you, very kind of you.
Great job! For real 🦾
Thanks!
Dude,… when you don’t have a stripping basket with you ,… you still have 4 fingers ,… 2 or 3 long strips on each finger,.. your line has been managed organically ,… just sayin…. I bought 2 of them,…. One with the little silicone tines sticking up like a sparse brush and an actual stripping basket ,…,got to have options ..!
Too many he said…
Please take this video down
I prefer pheasant tail for the tail section
I like pheasant tail also, but I find it sits differently in the water with it cause it’s a softer material. Sometimes the orientation is whatcha want though
Thanks for sharing. You have opened a can of worms here. My mind going in all directions.
Glad to have helped, this is the whole reason I make this channel, to help give inspiration
Oh, I love Fly Tier's Dungeon stuff!
Can’t beat their prices!
What line weight would I need to get distance on my cast in hard wind with that fly?
Probably 7-8wt
किशन मेवाडे🎉🎉🎉 ❤❤❤🎉🎉
Great pattern. I found a little UV resin on the mallard helps with durability and for it to maintain shape.
Thanks!
odd way to think about it who cares ? your having fun
I agree!
do you think it could work for bass in the mouth of a river?
I think so, add some weight if it’s fast moving water or a deep hole
@@McFlyAngler Thank you!🤙
4:36 “Ah, he broke me off”. While setting the hook like Bill Dance using 40lb braid.
Lol
Sometimes it's just fun to catch a few fish, so no hate here. However- if you really want to get the full package stick with the flies and lose the sauce. Slow the presentation down, use smaller files. # 8 and #10 hooks work well. Bonefish hooks are about right. Pay super attention to the noise and visual disturbances that you make because the carp sure are! And they are masters at ignoring the angler and just doing their thing. A strike indicator to suspend the fly works wonders, but that is "cheating" according to some. We all have our comfort levels and mine include indicators. Small ones. Carp on the fly will definitely sharpen one's fly fishing skills. When you dial the carp in it can be ridiculous action with dozens landed in a session. Then the bait fishers will be asking for a fly! Give them one and see if the fly fishing fire will ignite in one more human. It's a good thing to watch happen. Maybe better than a slob carp easing up to your fly, hesitating, and then ever so gently inhaling the fly. Best of luck to all!
I have virtually identical hen feathers and went on a tying spree after seeing this video! Made a slightly different version as a wet fly without the dubbed head! Made a dozen! I am certain it will prove a trout catcher! Thanks!
Glad the video helped to ignite your creative juices. Ya sometimes the material makes the fly.
